Because I could not stop for Death

Daar ik voor Dood niet stoppen kon-                                                          Because I could not stop for Death-
Deed hij ’t attent voor mij                                                                            He kindly stopped for me-
Wij pasten Samen in de Koets-                                                                 The Carriage held but just Ourselves-
Onsterfelijkheid ging mee.                                                                          And Immortality.

We reden traag – Hij had geen haast                                                         We slowly drove- He knew no haste
En ik liet achter mij                                                                                     And I had put away
Mijn arbeid en mijn vrije tijd,                                                                       My labour and my leisure too,
Zo Hoffelijk was Hij-                                                                                    For His Civility-

We gingen langs de School, gestoei                                                          We passed the School, were Children strove
Van Kinderen, in de Kring –                                                                        At Recess-  in the Ring-
Langs Velden Starend Graan – en langs                                                    We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain-
De Zon die Onderging –                                                                              We passed the Setting Sun-

Of nee – Die ging langs Ons-                                                                       Or rather- He passed Us-
Toen Dauw Kilte en huiver bracht-                                                              The Dews drew quivering and Chill-
Want enkel Tule- was mijn Sjaal-                                                                For only Gossamer, my Gown-
Mijn Jurk, maar Spinnerag –                                                                        My Tippet- only Tule

We stopten voor een Huis dat leek                                                              We paused before a House that seemed
Een Zwelling van de Grond –                                                                        A Swelling of the Ground-
Het Dak was nauwelijks te zien-                                                                   The Roof was scarcely visible-
De Kroonlijst – in de Grond –                                                                         The Cornice- in the Ground-

’t Is Eeuwen her – en toch voelt het-                                                             Since then- ’tis Centuries- and yet
Veel korter dan de Dag                                                                                 Feels shorter than the Day
Dat ik voor ’t eerst die Paarden wist                                                              I first surmised the Horses’ Heads
Naar Eeuwigheid op weg-                                                                             Were toward Eternity-
